St Joseph's Primary School, Chiltern, proudly celebrated its 125th anniversary with a memorable day of reflection, celebration and connection on Friday 11 September, bringing together generations of students, staff and families to honour the rich history of the school.
The celebration began with a special Mass celebrated by Father Peter Taylor. The liturgy provided an opportunity for the school community to give thanks for 125 years of Catholic education and the many people who have contributed to the life of St Joseph's throughout its history.
A highlight of the Mass was a performance by the students, who sang Rise O People, a beautiful song inspired by the legacy of Nano Nagle and the Presentation Sisters. The children’s voices filled the church as they paid tribute to the women whose vision, faith and dedication helped shape generations of learners.
The anniversary attracted many former and current members of the school community, with past and present teachers, principals and students returning to reconnect, share memories and celebrate the school's remarkable journey.
Following the Mass, guests gathered for a celebratory luncheon with a special memorabilia display showcasing photographs, documents, uniforms, trophies and artefacts from across the school's 125-year history.
Students played an important role throughout the afternoon. They conducted interviews with former students, learning firsthand about school life in years gone by. Principal Libby Dickinson also interviewed two former principals, providing valuable insights into the school's development and the changes that have occurred over the decades while maintaining its strong sense of community and faith.
Entertainment was provided by the students, who delighted guests with two energetic dance performances. Their enthusiasm and confidence reflected the vibrant spirit of the school and demonstrated how St Joseph's continues to nurture students' gifts and talents.
A significant moment of the afternoon was the ceremonial cutting of the anniversary cake by senior students, symbolising the connection between the school's past, present and future. The celebrations concluded with the burial of a time capsule in the school's Landcare native garden. Filled with memories and items representing school life in 2026, including past items from over the years, the capsule will provide a fascinating snapshot of today's St Joseph's students and community for future generations.
The 125th anniversary celebration was a wonderful reminder of the enduring values of faith, learning, service and community that have been at the heart of St Joseph's School since its foundation. As the school looks towards the future, it does so with gratitude for its rich heritage and confidence in the generations of students still to come.
